In today’s culture we find that technology through media plays a very important role in our busy lives. With handheld devices that literally put the world at our fingertips, it’s hard to not use this technology and rely on its convenience. Studies show that 413 million people in the U.S. alone turn to the internet for information and entertainment. And while there are those who still travel to what were once “everyday places” such as the library, or car lots, more and more people are going online to find what they are looking for. You can watch movies, and TV shows, you can find a new restaurant and check out their menu, you can research any topic that comes to mind, manage your bank accounts and you can even instant message other people who are online, all while never leaving the comfort of your own home. When people want to go somewhere new…let’s say a restaurant they’ve never been too, they will most likely search for it online, visit the website, and decide if that restaurant is where they want to spend their evening as well as their money.
So what does that have to do with churches and ministries? Research shows that most people will visit a churches website before ever stepping foot into the building. With so many churches offering different ministries and having different beliefs, church websites help people understand the vision and mission of a church and their community. People want to feel comfortable going to church, and having a website helps ease some of the frustration of finding the right church for them and their family. Then, once a family has found the right church, the website is a way for them to keep connected with what’s happening and when.
Having a website for your church is almost like having an advertisement for your church. It provides a place for two different types of people: new comers, and members. New comers or someone who might visit for the first time will go to a churches website and find information on beliefs, what ministries are offered, major upcoming events and service times. This is most likely all the information they would need to decide whether or not to visit a church. Members however, want to be reminded of the upcoming events and be informed of changes throughout the week or months. Easily accessible information keeps church members connected to the happenings of your church and helps make them feel involved. If your web developer does their job right, your website should reflect the vision and even the feel of the church on the web. This is very important especially to those visiting your website and church for the first time.
